One charge is probably a hold, not a second payment.

“My bank shows two charges for one dinner.”

What to do now

Try these in order. Stop as soon as one works.

  1. Check pending versus completed

A pending line is a hold. It usually clears on its own and is not a second payment.

    About 2 min
  2. Ask the merchant to void the duplicate

Show both entries and ask for a cancellation receipt for the failed attempt.

    About 5 min
  3. Contact your bank if both settle

Send the receipt and the two transaction dates. Ask for a dispute or chargeback.

    About 10 min

Why this happens

Ranked by how often it is the cause.

The merchant placed an authorization hold before the final charge.

Compare the amounts and the status labels in your banking app.

Likelihood: high

The first attempt timed out, so you paid again.

Ask the merchant to void the first attempt.

Likelihood: medium

The merchant split the bill into two transactions.

Ask for an itemised receipt.

Likelihood: low

If that does not work

Get out of the queue first. Solve the payment later.

  • Pay cash next time

No authorization hold and no retry risk.

  • Use one card for the whole trip

It is easier to spot a duplicate on a single statement.

  • Keep every receipt

Receipts are required for a chargeback.
